Strong winds disrupt flights at Wellington Airport
By Brendan Manning

Strong winds have again caused flight delays and cancellations at Wellington Airport.

Wellington Airport spokeswoman Briarley Kirk said some flights were delayed or cancelled due to wind, however the majority were still in operation.

Passengers were advised to check their flight status via the Wellington Airport or their airline's website.

Air New Zealand's website showed flights departing Wellington to Dunedin, Christchurch and Hamilton had been cancelled this morning.

Other link air service flights have been delayed.

MetService spokesman Daniel Corbett said it was "blowing like mad" in Wellington.

"We just had a recent gust here at our office in Kelburn at around about 130 km/h, down at the airport we've been up around 100 [km/h]."

In the next few hours the strong and potentially damaging winds would peak, Mr Corbett said.

The West Coast had received a good dumping of rain and rain warnings for the north-west Nelson ranges and the Tararua Ranges were expected to ease by midday, he said.

"As that front moves northwards for the rest of the North Island through the mid-to-late part of today, it loses a bit of its bark and bite so it's not as mean, not as nasty.

"There's still a band of rain and some strong winds as it moves to the Central Plateau and Auckland.

"And then we clear that away for the weekend, which turns into kind of a blustery start to the weekend, drier for the North Island [on] Saturday."

The West Coast of the South Island should expect further showers and stronger winds, Mr Corbett said.

Meanwhile on Sunday, a trough would be coming up the country, providing a chance of showers and rain for most areas which should clear by Monday, he said.

Auckland City

Rival of Europeans. The subsequent introduction of firearms, which began in Northland, upset the balance of

power and led to devastating inter-tribal warfare, causing iwi who lacked the new weapons to seek refuge in areas less

exposed to coastal raids. As a result, the region had relatively low numbers of Maori when European settlement of New

Zealand began. There is, however, nothing to suggest that this was the result of a deliberate European policy. On 27

January 1832, Joseph Brooks Weller, eldest of the Weller brothers of Otago and Sydney bought land including the

sites of the modern cities of Auckland and North Shore and part of Rodney District, for "one large cask of powder"
from "Cohi Rangatira"
After the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in February 1840, the new Governor of New Zealand, William Hobson,

chose the area as his new capital, and named it after George Eden, Earl of Auckland, then Viceroy of India. The land

that Auckland was established on was given to the Governor by local Maori iwi Ngati Whatua, as a sign of goodwill and

in the hope that the building of a city would attract commercial and political opportunities for the iwi. Auckland was

officially declared New Zealand's capital in 1841,and the transfer of the administration from Russell (now Old Russell)

in the Bay of Islands was completed in 1842. However, even in 1840 Port Nicholson (later Wellington) was seen as a

better choice for an administrative capital because of its proximity to the South Island and Wellington became the

capital in 1865. Auckland was the principal city of the Auckland Province until the provincial system was abolished in

A Korean food-preparation factory on Auckland's North Shore is being investigated after reports of worker exploitation.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment will investigate after a cross-agency operation in which the Labour Inspectorate, Immigration New Zealand and police visited the premises yesterday morning.

Labour Inspectorate northern regional manager David Milne said information received from police and the ministry's contact centre included workers being paid below the minimum wage and working up to 16 hours with few or no breaks.

"It has been found that the employer is unlawfully in New Zealand and he has since been detained by Immigration New Zealand," Milne said.

"The Labour Inspectorate has interviewed the factory's employees and at this early stage in the investigation we have identified breaches of the Employment Relations Act, with no employment agreements in place.

"The employer has been given a week to provide further information such as wage and time records before we progress the investigation further.

"Labour exploitation is not welcome in New Zealand and the ministry will not hesitate to take action to ensure our communities are free from this behaviour.

"For migrant business owners this could involve the ultimate consequence of deportation from New Zealand."

The ministry will analyse evidence over the next few weeks before deciding its next steps.

make this a highly recommended trip. Further away with plenty of good beaches, boutique accommodation, wineries and olive groves is Waiheke Island (45 min). Also worth a visit by ferry is Rangitoto (the large volcanic island that flanks the eastern horizon) - take good walking shoes, food and water to walk to the top - it can be very hot in summer - a bus service operates on some days for those that dont want to walk (enquire at the Britomart or ferry building information centre before setting out - and don't miss the last ferry back to the city as there is no accommodation on Rangitoto).
Popular areas on good bus routes include Ponsonby, Newmarket, Parnell, Mission Bay, Takapuna. A tourist explorer bus also completes a regular circuit of popular tourist sites. For travel to more distant suburban locations a car is recommended - many car hire firms have set up business in Auckland and rental rates are reasonable especially if renting for longer periods of time. Be aware that parking in Auckland can be complicated - make sure you read and understand parking control signs ( local government enforces parking fines and has no hesitation to have your vehicle towed). Be aware also of bus lanes (zones marked out on the road where only buses are permitted at certain times). These zones are also signposted but it can be easy to miss seeing them if concentrating on traffic. Fines are large and the authority administering is not tolerant.
The Auckland area was first settled by a confluence of Māori people of different tribes more than 700 years ago. From 1600 to 1750 the Tāmaki tribes terraced the volcanic cones, building pā(settlements behind protective palisades). Across the isthmus they developed 2,000 hectares of kūmara (sweet potato) gardens. These earthworks are easily seen on Mt Eden - a volcanic hill easily accessible from the CBD.
European settlement began in the early 1800s. The settlement resembled a shanty town in parts and ran along the gully in what is now Queen Street - alongside a creek (now under the road). The original shorelin
country. It has 1,397,300 residents, which is 32 percent of the country's population.

Kyle Lovern

Sports Editor

You can credit the Pond Creek Nation and the strong regional fan base the Belfry Pirates have. Credit may also be given to fans from other schools in the area and Pirate supporters now living in other states.

I’m sure there are many people from the Belfry area with sore fingers and thumbs from voting so many times.

The strong support helped Belfry coach Philip Haywood win the USA Today contest for the Best Coach in America.

The modest Haywood said he was “humbled and honored,” but as always he credits his assistant coaching staff and the “great players we have had over the years.”

“It’s not about me,” Haywood added.

The Pirate mentor owns the record for the most wins in history in the Bluegrass State and is one of the top active coaches in the United States for the most career victories. Haywood has been coaching at Belfry for 29 years, after spending nine years as the head coach in his hometown of Prestonsburg, Ky. His overall career record is , with two state titles in  He has led them to eight trips to the championship game.

“This contest was about our football program, the school and the community,” Haywood said of the honor. “It is more about the area and it was nice for our little community.”

Haywood said it shows the pride in community and of the Belfry fans.

“This was good for our area and is a bright spot for this community,” the veteran coach said. “This region has had some tough economic times.”

Philip was among 408 candidates for USA Today High School Sports’ first-ever Best High School Football Coach competition. Considering the Belfry, Ky. Area is rural and relatively small in population, you wouldn’t think Haywood would garner as many votes as he did.

But folks need to reconsider that notion

Coach Haywood posted the most votes nationally in each round, including the final round that wrapped up Tuesday. A total of votes were cast throughout the competition, including more than 3 million in the final round. Haywood received 1,529,789 votes in the final round, holding off a late-charging Kevin Lynott of Middletown, Md., who came in second with  votes in the national round.

Haywood first won the contest for the state of Kentucky and then advanced in the regional competition as Belfry Pirate fans continued to cast vote after vote. Word got out through the media and on social networks like Facebook and that helped spread the word.

“We have a team saying and this fits in with it well,” Haywood concluded. “We tell our team, ‘It’s not about me, it’s not about you, it is about us.’ I think that is what our community feels about the football program and that is what this is about.”

The Belfry athletic department will receive  for Haywood’s victory and a banner. Second through fifth places will also receive cash prizes for the athletic departments: second  third fourth and fifth All eight finalists receive banners for their schools.

Mt Cook Airline general manager Sarah Williamson has taken Air Nelson and Eagle Air under her wing in a move that will streamline the Link operators' regional operations.

Ms Williamson is now the Air New Zealand subsidiaries' new general manager, and will manage the three regional airlines from her base in Christchurch. She is currently recruiting a person to take on the role of head of Air Nelson, who will be Nelson based.

The three Air New Zealand Link operators have formed closer ties in recent years, with advantages found in being able to share aircraft as demand dictates, Ms Williamson said.

"We have been able to chop and change capacity to meet needs," she said.

The combined turbo prop fleet operated by the three Link operators is made up of  aircraft operated by Air Nelson, Eagle Air's  Beech  aircraft, and Mt

All three airlines have long histories in their respective regions. Parent company Air New Zealand has placed considerable emphasis on growing a service that connects provincial New Zealand, she said.

Ms Williamson, an Auckland University graduate with a Masters degree in science with honours in psychology, has been Mt Cook Airline general manager for the past four years. Before that she was Air New Zealand's general manager of direct sales. Her background is more in human resources than aviation, backed by a diploma in business management (personnel management and employee relations) but the airline industry has huge appeal.

"Airlines are quite seductive, interesting places in which to work. They are complex, multi-faceted and very fast-paced."

Ms Williamson, mum to two young girls, said the public will not see much change in the immediate future to the services currently provided.
